Work Matters

Ecclesiastes 3:22
So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?

I look back on a lifetime of work and feel blessed that I have been able to do meaningful work that I love. I also have had friends that have had jobs that they were not excited about, but they loved the fact that it provided for them in such a way that they could then do the things that they did care about. I have also had other friends who have had jobs that they hated, and it inflicted a toxic bitterness into many relationships. The reality is that we all have work that we will be required to put effort into for the majority of our lives. It doesn’t matter what type of work it is; it does matter the attitude we have about the work.

King Solomon was the wisest man who ever lived, and in a collection of thoughts about life that we find in the Book of Ecclesiastes, we see at the end of chapter three this verse about work. The main concept: Enjoyment of work!

I look at each of my adult children and would love for them to all have jobs that they love. I also know that most of us as adults have had our fair share of employment experiences that we would rather forget. The challenge from King Solomon is that we are responsible for the attitude we have about the work we do.

Back in Genesis 2, we see God give Adam the mandate to work in the Garden of Eden. Work existed before Adam and Eve sinned. Work is not meant to be a curse; it is meant to be a calling. Throughout the Bible, there are 859 passages that relate to work. Work is a part of a meaningful life.

If that is true, we may need an attitude adjustment in how we look at work. The best challenge we can embrace today is to see work as an opportunity, and not a curse. We may never fully understand in this life how the work we do matters.

Hustle.Day4Thought of the day: What is your attitude about the work you do? Where could you grow in your thinking about it? What may God be trying to teach you today?

Prayer: God, since work will be a part of my life, help me to embrace the attitude of joy about the work I do. Amen.
