“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Part of God’s plan is for us to work. Working is how we contribute to the world and serve those around us. It gives us a sense of accomplishment and allows us to financially provide for our families. Work wasn’t meant to be a miserable chore. In fact, God has uniquely designed each of us for specific work and we are called to work unto Him. When we step into God’s calling for our lives, we find purpose and enjoyment. Our work brings glory to God.
In his book The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren uses the acronym SHAPE to help readers identify how God has equipped them for the work He calls them.
God gives every believer spiritual gifts for serving and building up His church. What spiritual gifts has God given you? Consider taking an online spiritual gifts test. How can you use these gifts to minister to others?
All of us are passionate about something. Consider the dreams and desires God has placed on your heart. What stirs your emotions and drives you to move?
Each of us has the natural abilities we were born with. What are you good at? What skills come easy to you? What have other people commented on that you have a talent for?
Are you an extrovert or an introvert? A thinker or a feeler? Do you prefer art or numbers? Do you daydream or focus on the facts? Do you prefer working alongside others or flying solo? Consider taking an online personality test.
Each of us have experiences that have played a role in molding our character. Some are good and others are not. God uses all of our past experiences so we can effectively minister to others. Consider the family you grew up in, your educational or vocational experiences, your spiritual and ministry experiences, and also your painful experiences. All of these experiences have prepared you for the work God has for you.
God knows the ins and outs of you because He created you. He has shaped you for service. When we work out of our giftedness, we do our best work. The key is understanding how God has uniquely shaped you and accepting it. When we try to work outside of our gifts, it will lead to stress, frustration, and burnout. But when we do the work God intended for us, we become fruitful and fulfilled.
Thought of the day: Reflect on your SHAPE. Are you using your God-given gifts? How are you ministering to others in your workplace? If you don’t already serve in the church, pick an area to serve that best suits you.
Prayer: God, You are the creator of the heavens and the Earth. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Give me wisdom of Your plans for me and lead me on the right path. Reveal my shape so I can best serve You. Thank You for working all things together for good. Thank You for creating me for a purpose. May the work of my hands bring glory to You. Amen.
