Comfort One Another

2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

It took my wife Jennifer and me six years of trying before our first son was born. During those six years, we didn’t struggle with getting pregnant, but we did struggle with miscarriages. Each time Jennifer would get pregnant, we would be elated, and then would be equally devastated when the pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage. We had some dear friends from church come alongside us during these times and give us comfort through our pain. Through them, we felt that God was giving us comfort as well. We didn’t understand how we were ever going to use this experience for God or to give others comfort, but God did.

After our son was born, it was amazing how many women would talk to Jennifer about their experiences with miscarriage, and she was able to share our story with them. She was able to give these women hope and comfort, and I was able to talk with the husbands about the same things. We could have held on to our hurt and pain and let it warp into anger, but by sharing comfort with others, we were able to find more healing for ourselves. When we turned our pain over to God to receive His comfort, we were able to comfort others as well.

Devo Relationships 8.30Thought of the day: How has God given you comfort when you have experienced affliction? Who do you know that is experiencing something similar and you can give them comfort? Ask God to show you someone you can comfort in the same way God sent someone to comfort you when you needed it most. This is one of the ways we can love one another in the way that God loves us.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, please remind me of times when I have been comforted in my affliction. Please show me someone who I can comfort in the same way I have been comforted. I thank You that You continue to show Your love for me so I can show Your love to others. Amen.
