For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

In 2006, we adopted our daughter from China. She was seven at the time. Before the adoption, we did all the work. We paid all the expenses, traveled to China to get her, and welcomed her into our family with open arms. The only thing our daughter had to do was say she wanted to be adopted. That’s it! She only had to accept the adoption. We did all the rest. Even though she had never been to the United States and had never had a forever family, she had enough faith to accept the adoption and all of the things that would come with being part of our family. She didn’t have to do anything to earn a place in our hearts and family. She just had to say yes.
It’s the same with Jesus. He has already done all of the work for us by dying for us on the cross. When we say yes to Him, we accept the gift He has for us and all that comes with it. This isn’t a gift we have to earn. We don’t deserve it, but He is willing to freely give it to us anyway.
Our salvation through Jesus is by God’s grace alone. We can’t work harder to make God love us more. We can’t brag about how much we have done so Jesus would save us. We can only accept the gift He has for us and then have the faith to believe He has done everything so we can live for Him. When we stop thinking we have to earn God’s love, we can start having a true relationship with Him.
Thought of the day: Jesus paid a price He didn’t owe to pay a price we couldn’t pay.
Prayer: Jesus, please help me learn how to live by faith in You. Please help me realize this when I slip into thinking I that need to earn Your love. I want to follow You each day, so I can learn how to love God and love others in everything I do so I can have a deeper relationship with You. Amen.
