In my distress I called to the Lord; I called out to my God. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came to his ears.

We hear sounds all around us. There are the tiny decibels that bring a smile instantly to our face, and then there are those monster noises that cause a grimace or frown. It is impossible to begin our day without a sound that evokes some memory or thought of an important task for the day. Sounds can cause a stir so deep that a rush of fear can overtake our thoughts. There are dozens of songs about fear on the radio right now. People are sharing their fear and anxiety stories. We are living in a society that finally is allowing hard questions about depression to have a space. Our kids are experiencing the value of conversations about their fears. Anxiety is the big bad wolf and so many houses are being blown down by it.
I don’t think it is an accident that the scriptures repeatedly say, “Do NOT fear I am with you.” The Psalms contain verse after verse of God’s presence while we are in our dark, lonely place. When anxiety and panic strikes, our emotions long to cry out to the one who created our heart. We desire God to help us and that is exactly how He created us; not to be able to fix the chaos, but to need Him through the noise.
Panic comes at the most inconvenient times. God allows growth that could only come at that moment. This week, give yourself space to find His comfort through the garbage and anxiety of your darkest moments. Take a few minutes to breath in the quiet and ask Jesus to give you His words of true peace. We must train our brains and our hearts with His words to calm the twisted mess in our heads.
Are you swallowed up by the sounds of your day? Whether it’s the kids, a boss, or just the blaring of your television. I challenge you today to sit in quiet for 10 minutes and soak up the vast noise that is only Jesus. Let the Holy Spirit fill your ears and heart.
Thought of the day: God is listening, are you?
Prayer: God, thank You for hearing me when I pray to You, especially in difficult times in my life. Help me to be still and know You are God and that You are in control when my life feels out of control. I pray God that You will give me peace that passes my understanding. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
