The Freedom from Control

Mathew 6:25-26
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

Too many times I have found myself getting caught playing with the dials on the “control panel” of my life. Too often I catch myself valuing how well I feel about my life. If I’m happy at work, my life is good. If my bills are getting paid, my life is great. If the numbers in my bank account don’t have a minus sign in front of them, my life is fantastic. But if one of these areas in my life begins spinning out of my control, then I become unhappy. This is because I am lacking the one thing that gave me the most comfort: control.

As I read this passage, I can only imagine that Jesus was not speaking solely about food, water, and clothes. In life, God will ask us to do a lot of things for His glory and the purpose He has for us. The things He asks of us can be frightening and often have a vast amount of uncertainty attached. I believe Jesus is not only asking us to trust Him, but also to give Him full control in every area of our lives.

Trust is one of the hardest things for us to GIVE as humans because it means we are relying on someone else, instead of ourselves. Hebrews 11:1 it says, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” Faith is placing our trust in God, even though we can’t see Him. But more than that, faith is belief, trust, hope, and obedience.

19-Devo-3.19Thought of the day: Take a moment to look at your life from a 30,000-foot view. What is the central focus of your life that drives you? If God is not the center of your focus for your life and relationship, what needs to change?

Prayer: God, I ask You to help me truly understand the perfect love You have for me. Help me to learn that, despite all of the plates that I have spinning in my life, You are the foundation and rock on which I need to stand. Father, help me to know it is not the things I own or the amount of money I have that determines Your love for me, but the relationship I have with You. Help me to trust You and give You control of each area of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
