1 John 3:16-18
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
Being a follower of Jesus means you are constantly in pursuit of Him. You have a desire to grow deeper in your knowledge and understanding of His love for you and what He wants for your life. As you seek this out, you will become more desperate for Him in every way. Your need to be like Him won’t just be out of obedience, but out of a natural desire to want to please him.
This is why giving of yourself by serving others is a natural side effect to following Jesus. We aren’t to give of ourselves out of obligation, but out of a desire to be like Jesus. As the verse says, “Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.”
This can look very different for each of us, and as we’ve been studying through this series God has gifted each of us with unique talents and abilities. Those are the areas we should be leaning into and using to glorify God and to serve others. Perhaps you are naturally hospitable and opening up your home to others for small groups, dinners, or other gatherings is a natural way for you to serve others. Or maybe you’re skilled in a certain area and can offer your expertise to someone in need. You could offer free childcare to a couple needing a night out, bring a meal to someone, provide home repair or car services to your neighbor, and the list goes on and on.
No matter who you are, God has most certainly blessed you with unique abilities that can be used to bless someone else.
Thought of the day: Consider your gifts and talents and think of ways you could uniquely give of yourself this week. List at least one person in your life that you’d like to serve this week and then make a plan to see it through.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for pursuing me and blessing me with these gifts. Thank You for showing me how to be more like You and help me to see opportunities where I can serve others with the gifts You’ve given me.
